Old Glory is Flying Outside Our Home

Our HomeThis is a guest post from my wife, Laura, author of A Junk Foodaholic’s Journey to a Healthy Lifestyle.

Old Glory is flying outside our home, honoring all who died to give us the many freedoms we enjoy today.

I found a wonderful poem you may be interested in reading. It’s called “I am the Flag” by Ruth Apperson Rous.

I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend celebrating our nation’s Independence Day. I truly love America. As Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”

What Everybody Ought To Know About Grilling Out

Back when I was in college, I bought a book about weight lifting and nutrition. In one particular section, I remember reading a comment from former Mr. Olympia, Franco Columbo, about grilling out. He said cooking meat over an open flame is equivalent to smoking six cigarettes!

The book went on to say grilling meat at high temperatures produces carcinogens. These are substances that can cause changes in DNA, which may lead to cancer.

Yeah, grilling out is as American as the Fourth of July. But you can still have a good time and reduce your risk by following these recommended steps:

  • Select lean cuts of meat and limit portion size.
  • Place aluminum foil with holes over the grill to prevent fat from dripping and causing flare-ups that can deposit carcinogens from smoke onto the meat.
  • Marinate meat for at least 10 minutes before grilling. Research suggests that soaking meat in any acidic liquid reduces the formation of carcinogens.
  • Pre-cook meat briefly indoors before grilling, to reduce the amount of juices that can hold carcinogens.
  • Flip the meat often to reduce the temperature on both sides.
  • Avoid eating charred parts of meat.
  • Do not press, flatten or pierce the meat. It will cause flavorful juices to be lost and may cause flare-ups.

By using these tips, you can minimize your health risks while celebrating the holiday with friends and family.

Have a great July 4th!

Top 10 Reasons To Juice

My wife credits juicing, along with whole-food nutritional supplements, as the reason her eyesight was restored.

Now, she no longer needs to wear glasses and is quite happy she doesn’t have to hassle with them anymore.

Following are ten reasons why you too should consider juicing for good health:

1. Liquids – We need liquids to remain healthy, and juicing is a good source of liquids.

2. Specific vitamins and minerals – When you juice raw fruits and vegetables, you get specific vitamins and minerals in a natural, easily absorbable form. Looking for beta carotene? Drink carrot juice. Looking for potassium? Try a green juice, or blackberry juice.

3. Phytochemicals – Heard of them? They are substances in plants that are linked to good health and to prevention of specific diseases. They are found only in fruits and vegetables, and juicing is a great way to get them.

4. Protein from non-meat sources – Although fruits and vegetables do not contain large quantities of protein, their juice can be a convenient carrier. Simply add some brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, or whole grains to whatever you’re juicing. These give you protein without the fat that meat contains, and protein that is quickly and easily absorbed by the body.

5. Quick absorption – When you drink juice, the nutrients get to you quickly.

6. Less digestive work – When you drink juice, you save your body energy; it doesn’t have to do as much digesting. It also helps maintain your supply of digestive enzymes; you do not use as many.

7. Healthy sugar – No, this is not an oxymoron. Juices contain simple sugars that we need for energy; however, because they are combined with other healthful nutrients, they are not harmful, as are refined sugars.

8. The complete package – When you juice, you get the whole package – all the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables. This means natural nutrients in natural proportions, not added sugars, like those found in juices on supermarket shelves.

9. Juicing prevents disease – Many studies point out that a diet high in fruits and vegetables can prevent disease.

10. Enzymes! – Fruit and vegetable juices provide a convenient source of enzymes. Although people don’t think of them much, enzymes are extremely important to health. They spark the essential chemical reactions we need to live. They are necessary for digesting food, for stimulating the brain, for providing cellular energy, and for repairing all tissue.

This Just In: Watermelon May Have Viagra-Effect

You can’t make this stuff up. According to researchers at Texas A&M University, watermelon has chemical properties similar to Viagra.

Here’s what you need to know: Watermelons contain lycopene, beta carotene and citrulline. Those first two are just all-around good for you. But the third chemical property, citrulline, is converted in the body to arginine, which boosts nitric oxide and relaxes blood vessels, which leads to, well, you know.

So forget about that little blue pill. Instead, head over to the produce aisle and grab a couple of melons!

Following is the article:

COLLEGE STATION – A cold slice of watermelon has long been a Fourth of July holiday staple. But according to recent studies, the juicy fruit may be better suited for Valentine’s Day.

That’s because scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center in College Station.

“We’ve always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study.”

Beneficial ingredients in watermelon and other fruits and vegetables are known as phyto-nutrients, naturally occurring compounds that are bioactive, or able to react with the human body to trigger healthy reactions, Patil said.

In watermelons, these include lycopene, beta carotene and the rising star among its phyto-nutrients – citrulline – whose beneficial functions are now being unraveled. Among them is the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

Scientists know that when watermelon is consumed, citrulline is converted to arginine through certain enzymes. Arginine is an amino acid that works wonders on the heart and circulation system and maintains a good immune system, Patil said.

“The citrulline-arginine relationship helps heart health, the immune system and may prove to be very helpful for those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes,” said Patil. “Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it.”

While there are many psychological and physiological problems that can cause impotence, extra nitric oxide could help those who need increased blood flow, which would also help treat angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.

“Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra,” Patil said, “but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects.”

The benefits of watermelon don’t end there, he said. Arginine also helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other toxic compounds from our bodies.

Scientists to Test if Cancer Cure Can Work in Humans

American researchers will soon start a human trial to determine whether a treatment that can eradicate cancer in mice will do the same in people.

The treatment will transfuse specific white blood cells, called granulocytes, into patients with advanced forms of cancer. The granulocytes will come from healthy young people with immune systems that produce cells that have high levels of anti-cancer activity.

In the animal studies, white blood cells from cancer-resistant mice cured all lab mice who had malignant tumours. The cells have also been able to kill cervical, prostate and breast cancer tumour cells in Petri dish tests.

“All the mice we treated were 100 percent cured,” lead researcher Dr. Zheng Cui told CTV News. “So that was very surprising for us.”

Cui, an associate professor of pathology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, announced the study Saturday at the Understanding Aging conference in Los Angeles.

Granulocytes account for about 60 percent of all white blood cells in the human body. The scientists already know, via a small study of human volunteers, that granulocytes from people under the age of 50 are most effective at killing cancer cells.

The study will begin with 22 cancer patients for whom conventional treatment has been unsuccessful. The researchers say that they will know within three months if the treatment will work in humans.

Cancer researchers worldwide will be watching the tests closely.

“Certainly in the mouse, being able to do these things is quite remarkable and very exciting,” said Dr. Ronan Foley of the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton, Ont. “Oftentimes when it is translated into the human situation it doesn’t work as well. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t going to work.”
